Merry Christmas to me...

The Accordance Premier Scholar's pack is on the way! I'm excited about having an exegetical software that is native to the Mac operating system. (I've been using Libronix on the PC side of my mac (via Bootcamp), and it has been helpful. However, since I remain a loyal Mac owner, I've decided to take the plunge and go with the simplicity and beauty of Accordance.)

Now to get a word processing software that works with right to left scripts (i.e., Hebrew, Arabic, etc.). Word for Mac has been a complete headache when it comes to typing in Hebrew. I'm thinking about either Pages or Mellel. Whatever I end up with, I want it to be my software for the next 3 and 1/2 years (i.e., all the way through my dissertation). Does anyone out there have any suggestions?

your profile pic make you look so estudious :-)

Pages has the same issues with right-left scripts as Word. But I think I recall seeing something about Snow Leopard fixing that and allowing for typing right-left - but since I'm not doing a whole lot of Hebrew typing anymore, I haven't tested it out yet.

Overall, I like Pages way more than Word and started it using it exclusively my last year at CTS. I still have Word on my mac, but only because I occasionally get attachments from "the dark side" or have to send something that way.

    Haven't heard of Mellel.

I was using Accordance for a short time before Logos, but wan't too impressed with it. Liked Logos better. Version 4 is much simpler to use and more stream lined with its interface. But as it goes with them, Logos for mac is way behind schedule and not worth purchasing right now (despite their promises that it would be equal to the windows version when it came out). I'd be interested in hearing a detailed report about your experience with Accordance 8 and how it compares to Libronix.

I'm afraid I don't have an experienced recommendations for you. I am aware of a few other options, such as Mariner Write, Nisus Writer, and Bean, but I have not idea how they handle right-to-left typing. Some of them appear to advertise support, but you won't really know until you try a demo.

I, personally, gave up on word processors a long time ago and let my inner (and outer) geek revel in the glory of LaTeX. I wouldn't recommend it unless you enjoy solving computer programming problems when you are supposed to be writing, but, in that sphere, it reigns supreme.

I asked my Hebrew writing friend (www.hebrew4christians.com) and he recommends DavkaWriter Pro.
